My Own Reflection on the Power of Istighfar

Whenever I felt stuck without a clear path forward, I stopped focusing solely on the desired outcome and began increasing my istighfar. Repeating Astaghfirullah sincerely was not about using a magic formula—it was about returning to Allah.

Each time I turned to repentance, I noticed key shifts:

How Many Times Did the Prophet ﷺ Make Istighfar?

The Sunnah gives us excellent guidance.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“O people, repent to Allah, for I repent to Him one hundred times a day.”

There are also authentic narrations mentioning that he sought Allah’s forgiveness more than seventy times a day.

Therefore, 100 times daily is an excellent Sunnah-based goal.

But there is no need to stop there.

You can make istighfar:

• 100 times
• 200 times
• 500 times
• More than that

The more important question is:

After Fajr

Sayyid al-Istighfar — once

Suppose you want marriage.

Make istighfar.

But also:

Tawakkul does not mean abandoning the means.

We often use the word “miracle” to describe money arriving unexpectedly.

Then you discover gratitude.
