What Is Istikhara in Islam?

The Arabic word Istikhara means seeking what is good or best. In Islamic practice, Istikhara is a voluntary prayer through which a Muslim asks Allah to guide them toward what is best in a particular matter.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught his companions to perform Istikhara for their affairs. Jabir ibn Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet ﷺ taught them this prayer as he taught them chapters of the Quran.

Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 1166.

Istikhara does not replace careful thinking, consultation, or personal responsibility. It helps a believer seek Allah’s guidance while taking sensible steps toward a decision.

When Should You Pray Istikhara?

You can pray Istikhara when you are uncertain about a permissible decision and want Allah to guide you toward what is beneficial.

Common situations include:

  • Deciding whether to accept a marriage proposal.
  • Choosing between job offers or career opportunities.
  • Considering a business partnership.
  • Deciding whether to move to another city.
  • Evaluating an important educational opportunity.

Istikhara is not needed to decide whether an obligatory act should be performed or a clearly prohibited act should be avoided. For example, a Muslim does not seek guidance about whether to perform the obligatory prayers or commit a clearly forbidden action.

What Does the Quran Say About Seeking Guidance?

Allah says:

“And consult them in the matter. And when you have decided, then rely upon Allah.”

Quran 3:159

This verse highlights consultation and trust in Allah. Together with Istikhara, these principles encourage Muslims to seek advice, consider the available facts, and place their trust in Allah when making decisions.

How to Pray Istikhara Step by Step

The method of Istikhara is straightforward and based on the authentic hadith narrated by Jabir (Sahih al-Bukhari 1166).

Step 1: Make Your Intention

Decide which permissible matter you need guidance about. The intention is in your heart; no special verbal declaration is required.

Step 2: Perform Wudu

Make wudu as you would for any other prayer, ensuring that you are in a suitable state for salah.

Step 3: Pray Two Rak’ahs

Pray two voluntary rak’ahs, separate from the obligatory prayer. Recite Surah Al-Fatihah and any other Quranic verses or surahs you know in each rak’ah.

There is no authentic requirement to recite a particular surah specifically for Istikhara.

Step 4: Recite the Istikhara Dua

After completing the two rak’ahs, recite the supplication taught by the Prophet ﷺ. Mention your particular matter when you reach the part of the dua referring to it.

Step 5: Make Your Decision and Trust Allah

Consider the relevant facts, seek advice from trustworthy and knowledgeable people, and proceed with a reasonable decision. Do not wait for a dream or assume that every difficulty means the decision is wrong.

English Transliteration

English Translation

O Allah, I seek the best from You through Your knowledge, and I seek ability through Your power, and I ask You from Your great bounty. You have power, and I do not; You know, and I do not; and You are the Knower of the unseen.

O Allah, if You know that this matter is good for me in my religion, my livelihood, and the outcome of my affairs, then decree it for me, make it easy for me, and bless me in it.

And if You know that this matter is bad for me in my religion, my livelihood, and the outcome of my affairs, then turn it away from me and turn me away from it. Decree good for me wherever it may be, and then make me content with it.

Important: When reciting hadhal-amr (“this matter”), bring the specific decision to mind or mention it as appropriate.

Why I Never Start a New Task Without Istikhara

Ever since I learned the authentic Istikhara dua, it has become a natural part of my daily routine before starting any new action or venture.Personal routine showing Istikhara prayer and dua incorporated into daily life actions like shopping, meetings, and planning.

Whether I am heading out for shopping, planning an admission, booking a travel ticket, or organizing a family gathering at home, I always begin by seeking Allah’s help first.

Alhamdulillah, the results have been truly remarkable. When shopping, I consistently find myself buying valuable, less expensive, and genuinely useful items. When going into a meeting, it almost always ends in success.

Of course, life also brings major challenges, difficult problems, and tough decisions. Whenever I face a heavy task, I offer two rak’ahs of voluntary prayer, recite this beautiful dua two or three times a day, and ask Allah to guide me and show me the way. Alongside this, I frequently read the tasbeeh Ihdinas-siratal-mustaqeem (Guide us to the straight path).

By doing this, things naturally become easier—whether it is deciding whether to go ahead with something or navigating a hurdle. By turning to Allah first, every endeavour truly starts and ends for the better.

When Is the Best Time to Pray Istikhara?

Istikhara can be performed at times when voluntary prayer is permitted. Many Muslims prefer to pray at night because it offers a quiet opportunity for reflection and supplication.

Avoid the prohibited times for voluntary salah, particularly during sunrise, when the sun is at its zenith shortly before Dhuhr, and during sunset. Exact prayer-time boundaries should be checked according to your local timetable and the relevant scholarly guidance.

You do not have to pray Istikhara immediately before sleeping. It is not restricted to Thursday night or any particular day.

What Are the Signs of Istikhara?

A common misconception is that Istikhara must produce a dream, a specific color, or a supernatural sign. The authentic hadith does not establish any of these as requirements.

After Istikhara:

  • Assess the situation calmly and realistically.
  • Consult people with relevant knowledge and experience.
  • Consider whether the opportunity is sound and permissible.
  • Move forward when you have reasonably decided, trusting Allah.
  • Remain open to changing circumstances and new information.

Ease or difficulty alone is not a guaranteed sign of Allah’s answer. Avoid treating every obstacle or feeling as a definitive message.
