1. Lineage and Miraculous Birth

Prophet Ismail (AS) was the firstborn son of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and his wife Hajar (RA). For many years, Prophet Ibrahim had prayed earnestly to Allah for a righteous child:

“My Lord, grant me [a child] from among the righteous.” (Surah As-Saffat 37:100)

In his old age, Allah granted Ibrahim’s sincere supplication and blessed him and Hajar with a son, whom they named Ismail.

2. Settling in the Desert and the Miracle of Zamzam

When Ismail was still an infant, Prophet Ibrahim was commanded by Allah to take Hajar and Ismail to a barren, uninhabited valley in Arabia—where Mecca stands today.

Leaving them with a pouch of dates and a skin of water, Ibrahim turned to leave.

Hajar asked, “Has Allah commanded you to do this?” Ibrahim replied, “Yes.” Relying entirely on divine providence, she courageously said, “Then Allah will not abandon us.”

Soon, the water supply ran out, and infant Ismail began crying from thirst.

Desperate to find help, Hajar ran back and forth seven times between two hills, Safa and Marwah.

In response to her devotion, Allah sent the Angel Jibril (Gabriel), who struck the ground. Fresh, pure water sprang forth from the earth.

Hajar urged the water to stay contained, calling out, “Zamzam” (Stop flowing).

This miraculous spring provided life to the region, drawing the nomadic Jurhum tribe to settle there and transforming a desolate desert into a thriving city.

3. Youth and Building the Holy Kaaba

Ismail grew up among the Jurhum tribe, learning Arabic and excelling in nobility, righteousness, and archery. When Prophet Ibrahim returned to visit his family, Allah commanded father and son to build the Kaaba as the first house of worship dedicated solely to Allah.

Side by side, they lifted the heavy stones, laying the foundation while praying:

“Our Lord, accept [this] from us. Indeed You are the Hearing, the Knowing.” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:127)

Near the completion, Ibrahim stood on a stone (now known as Maqam Ibrahim) to place the higher blocks. Upon completing the building, Allah commanded Ibrahim to call humanity to pilgrimage (Hajj).

4. The Supreme Test of Obedience and Sacrifice

When Ismail reached young adulthood, Prophet Ibrahim saw a recurring dream in which Allah commanded him to sacrifice his beloved son. Recognizing that the dreams of prophets are divine commands, Ibrahim shared this vision with Ismail:

“O my son, indeed I have seen in a dream that I must sacrifice you, so see what you think.” (Surah As-Saffat 37:102)

Demonstrating extraordinary faith and submission, Ismail replied:

“O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, of the steadfast.” (Surah As-Saffat 37:102)

As Ibrahim prepared to fulfill the command at Mina, Satan tried to tempt them to disobey, but both threw stones at Satan to reject him—an act commemorated today during Hajj as the Ramy al-Jamarat.

Just as Ibrahim was about to execute the sacrifice, Allah called out to him, declaring that he had fulfilled the vision. Allah replaced Ismail with a ram from Paradise, saving Ismail and rewarding their ultimate devotion.
